Club History

The club (NORTH EAST WALES BASKETBALL CLUB) was formed in the summer of 2003 by Matt Weedall, Dave Croasdale and Andy Pearson. Andy was Development Officer and provided links not only with NEWI but also local councils, the Sports Council and some local schools. Andy after a few months moved to the North East of England, and much of his work has been covered by Dave Weedall.

The object of the Nets organisation was to deliver a high standard of National League basketball to the Wrexham and North Wales area. At the time players were travelling to Liverpool and Manchester to play basketball beyond local league standard.

The only previous National League team that had played in North Wales was the Flintshire Flyers organisation, which played in Deeside until the 2000 / 2001 season.

The inaugural season of 2003 / 2004 the Nets organisation competed very well in the National Division Three (North) and finished in 5th place narrowly missing out on a play-off spot. The following year the Nets really came into their own, following a slow start to the first half of the season, only to gather pace and go on an 8 game winning streak beating some of the top teams in the division. This led them to the semi-final where they unfortunately fell to a better team on the day in the eventual divisional champions Derby. However because England Basketball were looking to change its league set up they invited Nets to Division Two for 2005-06 season, based on the strength of the team since the New Year period.

2005-06 saw two new teams develop under the Nets banner. The under 18s played in the North West Conference of the National league, and the under 16s played fortnightly in tournaments on the Wirral to gain match experience with a view to playing National League in the future.
The Senior team finished 2005-06 in 9th place, but only one win away from making the play-offs. The season ended on a high winning five of the last seven matches.

2006-07 - The squad was strengthened over the summer, both on and off the court. More backroom helpers were found, and Mark Ogley took up more of a coaching role and less of a playing role, which in turn allowed Mat Weedall more time to concentrate on playing.
The under 18s having lost the nucleus of their squad through age limit, continued to play in the NW Conference, made up of last years under 16s, playing ahead of their age group. They are coached by Dave Mclean.
