Nets bounce back
With a battling display of determination and character, Nets came from behind to take the points in a barnstorming finish at Colchester United on Saturday, winning 77-75. These hard-earned points give Nets a lifeline to survival in Division Two.
After their long journey Nets were blasted early by Colchester who threatened to run away with the match, winning the first quarter 27-16.
Nets settled down to their work and hit back hard in the second quarter with 10 points from top scorer Alan Duppa. Strong defensive work from Steve Roberts and Jon Linsley among others restricted Colchester to 13 points and enabled Nets to go in only 40-37 down at half-time.
The visitors took command in the third quarter with some slick, fast-moving basketball. Steve Flanagan led the charge with seven points ably supported by Duppa, Wijdekop and Ramburuth. Nets overturned the deficit to lead by four at the end of the period.
Colchester threw everything into the final quarter, but Nets dug in and six unanswered points from Duppa kept the visitors' noses in front. A superb three-point shot from United's Wilson closed the gap to two and set the nerves jangling, but some good possession basketball from Nets enabled them to run the clock down and secure victory.

Nets suffer Midlands' misery
NEWI Nets good run of form came to an abrupt halt at the Woodcock Centre in Birmingham. A powerful Athletics outfit eventually wore down their visitors who had made an encouraging start to the game. In the first quarter Nets enjoyed a solid opening with Steve Flanagan, Andy White and Steve Roberts to the fore. They took the quarter 19-14 through some slick movement and tight defence. Although they held their advantage for five more minutes in the second quarter, Aston began to come on strong led by Steve Barnes and Tony Sims. By half-time they had turned the deficit into a seven-point cushion, leading 38-31 at the break. Worse was to follow as the Athletics landed two early three-pointers to leave Nets 13 points adrift at the start of the second half. Roberts enjoyed a late scoring flurry, but Nets badly missed the height and agility of Richard Parker and Jon Linsley. Player-coach Matt Weedall said he was disappointed with the second-half performance, calling it a 'lacklustre show'. 'Luckily for us both Bath and Col-chester lost but it will take something of a miracle for us to make the playoffs now, especially with our last few games all away,' he said. Nets travel to Bath Romans on Saturday in a must-win game if they are to have any chance of making the play-offs.

Now for big play-off push!
NEWI Nets' dreams of making the EBL Division Two play-offs are very much alive after they edged out Tamar Valley Cannons in their last home league game of the season. Sunday's 70-69 success moved the Wrexham outfit off the bottom and up to 10th which is just two points off eighth-placed Tamar, who occupy the final play-off spot. To achieve their goal, Nets are going to have to improve their away re-cord. But given their form since the turn of the year - Sunday's win was their third in a row - player-coach Matt Weedall believes there's no reason why they can't make the end-of-season tournament. Yet they made hard work of it on Sunday against a Tamar side who came alive after a slow start. Nets were 18-5 ahead within the first six minutes, before ending the first quarter 24-13 to the good - Steve Flanagan (10), Maarten Wijdekop (6) and Richard Parker (4) doing the damage. But the next two quarters belonged to the visitors as they reduced the home side's lead to just five points. Indeed, Nets were grateful to the three-pointers from Weedall and Andy White that kept them in front going into the final passage, which proved to be a thrilling affair. Good work from Alan Duppa (6) and Robbie Connell (2) gave the hosts a seven-point advantage with just three minutes to play. But then back came Tamar to worry the Nets, who finally put the game to bed with a two-pointer from Weedall. The boss said: 'We made hard work of this game but I suppose a win is a win and we need the points. 'We started well enough and caught them cold, but Tamar are a good side and credit to them for coming back. 'So I was pleased with the way we dug in near the end and took the points.' Flanagan and Wijdekop led the way with 14 points apiece, followed by Duppa (10), White and Weedall (both 8). Nets travel to Birmingham on Saturday to take on Aston Athletics.

Nets play Trailblazers off the court
NEWI Nets recorded their fourth win of 2006 as they crushed Derby Trailblazers 97-80 on Sunday. Although the Wrexham outfit remain bottom of the EBL Division Two, their upturn in form since the turn of the year means they are now only four points off sixth-placed Liverpool, so player-coach Matt Weedall's dream of a play-off place could still come true. The boss was delighted with his team's display of disciplined, high-tempo basketball against a strong Derby side. Weedall said: 'Our control was complete - we really played them off the court. 'Our defence was tight and our formation had Derby nonplussed. We looked after the ball well and made the most of our scoring opportunities.' Back at Plas Coch Sports Centre after playing their previous 'home' match in Flintshire, Nets were quick out of the traps on Sunday, with Weedall, Steve Flanagan and Maarten Wijdekop putting them 15-8 up at the end of the first quarter. It was tighter in the second, but with point guard Robbie Connell enjoying his best game of the season, the hosts managed to take a lead into the break. And they built on that in the third quarter, with Flanagan and Alan Duppa shooting well, while Steve Roberts worked overtime in the engine room. Holding a 15-point advantage going into the final passage, it was showtime for the Nets, with the top-scoring Flanagan displaying his full array of skills, while Jon Linsley and Andy White were tenacious in defence. Flanagan finished the match with 29 points, followed by Duppa (19), Weedall (12), Roberts and Connell (both 10).

Overtime delight
NEWI Nets moved off the bottom of the EBL Division Two with a win in Flintshire on Sunday. The Wrexham outfit beat Northampton Neptunes 90-82 in overtime at the Deeside Leisure Centre. Nets - who usually play at the Plas Coch Sports Centre - held their nerve after it ended 78-78. The victory owed much to the three-point shooting of Steve Flanagan and Vijay Rambruth and was their third of the year. Nets player-coach Matt Weedall said: 'It's satisfying to finish strongly, especially against a strong outfit like Northampton. Our three-point shooting was a revelation. Credit to Steve and Vijay for their 33 points -that spread confidence.'Flanagan top-scored with 29, followed by Rambruth, with 17, and Steve Roberts, with 13. Debutant Richard Parker, who is on the books of giants Chester Jets, added steel to the defence. Nets face a tricky test at league leaders West Herts Warriors on Saturday.

Weedall happy at start to year
NEWI Nets player-coach Matt Weedall was satisfied after his side gleaned one victory from last weekend's double header. The Wrexham outfit edged out Colchester United 80-77 on Saturday, for only their second win in this season's EBL Division Two. But tiredness crept in a day later, as they went down 98-77 to Mansfield Express.
The two-point return leaves Nets still bottom of the standings, but Weedall reckons the success over Colchester gives them something to build on. He said: After our poor pre-Christmas run, it was a welcome two points for us and we hope we that can carry it on in the new year. It was nice to see us win in a tight finish after losing out narrowly on a number of occasions so far this season.
Jon Linsley was the star on Saturday while Steve Roberts also won praise for his cool free-throwing late on. The first quarter was a seesaw affair that Nets shaded 22-19, thanks largely to 10 points from Linsley and six from Steve Flanagan. The second quarter was also close, with the visitors taking it 22-20. But solid defensive work from Roberts and Weedall meant the hosts went into the break 42-41 to the good.
The highlight on the restart was a superb three-pointer by Flanagan, while Linsley continued to dominate in attack. Weedall's men led 63-60 going into the final quarter, which proved to be a real battle. Alan Duppa's eight points put Nets in control, but only fine defensive work from Maarten Wijdekop, and Roberts' calmness from the line, ensured they took the honours.
Linsley led the scoring with 27 points, followed by Duppa (12), Flanagan (11) and Weedall (10).

Nets on a downer
NEWI Nets' year ended on a low after going down to a seventh straight defeat in the EBL Division Two. Sunday's 93-87 home loss to Bath Romans leaves the Wrexham outfit firmly anchored to the foot of the standings, in what is their debut season in the third-tier of British basketball.
Nets began with a flourish at the Plas Coch Sports Centre, however, opening up a 19-12 lead with some sharpshooting from John Linsley and Steve Flanagan, before Romans responded with a late surge to level the first quarter at 26-apiece. Nets hit back in the second, with Alan Duppa, Maarten Wijdekop and Andy White sharing the points to give their side a 50-41 half-time advantage.
Nets scoring-streak dried up in the third quarter, as they missed a number of scoring chances close to the basket. But not for the first time this season, Matt Weedall's men threatened a late comeback, and with four minutes to play, the score was tied at 83-83. After falling behind again, Nets were forced to concede free-throws to gain possession - and that cost them dear.
Chief Weedall said: 'Our lack of consistency cost us. We played and shot well in the opening phase and were in a strong position at half-time, but a poor third quarter set us back. We will continue to train hard and look to turn things round in the new year.'
Duppa top scored on Sunday with 16 points, followed by Flanagan (13), Linsley (13) and Wijdekop (12).

NEWI hope to raise spirits with freebie
NEWI Nets are offering North Wales basketball fans free entry for Sunday's home clash with Team Bath Romans. The EBL Division Two encounter will be the Wrexham side's last of the year, so they've decided to cut their losses in the hope of getting a big crowd at the Plas Coch Sports Centre.
And Nets need the support, as Saturday's 102-84 loss at home to Aston Athletics was their seventh in eight games - meaning they remain rooted to the bottom. Having already lost to their Birmingham visitors twice this season in the Patron's Cup, the last thing they needed was a slow start - but that's precisely what they got. Despite six points apiece for Maarten Wijdekop and Steve Flanagan, the hosts deservedly trailed 30-17 at the end of the first period.
Things improved in the second, with the returned-to-form Alan Duppa posting 10 points to give Nets a 23-18 quarter-victory. But they failed to build on that after the break, as Aston's expert shooting from the three-point zone proved too hot for them to handle. Nets refused to give up, though, and were just nine points behind with five minutes to go, before a final surge from Athletics enabled them to run out easy winners.
Duppa top-scored with 27 points, followed by player-coach Matt Weedall with 25 and Flanagan with 15.
Disappointed Nets assistant coach Mark Ogley said: 'We need to rekindle the fire which we showed in the second half of last season which got us promoted. To do that we need a step up in commitment from certain players. Having three senior players out doesn't help, but we shouldn't be losing heavily to the likes of Aston. But we do have a chance to turn things round with a home game again on Sunday to Team Bath Romans.'

Depleted Nets remain rooted
NEWI Nets' losing streak stretched to five games on Saturday when they went down 73-56 at Tamar Valley. The defeat in Devon means the Wrexham side stay at the foot of the EBL League Division Two, having won just one in seven. Nets were hardly helped by the absence of John Linsley, Steve Roberts and Robbie Connell.
But player-coach Matt Weedall didn't use that as an excuse. He said: 'Travelling with eight players is never a good thing - especially so far from home - but we could and should have run them a lot closer. We hope to have some of the players back for our next game. I want us to show the character to bounce back.
Nets started well on Saturday, with Alan Duppa notching eight points and Steve Flanagan four, putting them 16-14 to the good at the end of the first quarter. But the second was a different matter as Tamar stormed into a nine-point lead. It got no better for Nets in the third, losing it 25-15. And though they rallied in the final quarter - winning it by two points - they could never make up for the two middle sessions, which saw them miss several easy scoring opportunities.

Nets pay the price for lapses
Luckless NEWI Nets suffered heartache on Saturday when Liverpool pipped them in the final 20 seconds of their EBL Division Two clash at Plas Coch Sports Centre.
Trailing by 13 points with six minutes to go, Nets staged a dramatic revival that saw them overturn the deficit and lead by one point with 15 seconds left. Two lay-up chances should have sealed the game for the Wrexham outfit, but both were fluffed and Liverpool broke away to score a last-gasp victory.
Gutted player-coach Matt Weedall said: We gave ourselves the chance of a thrilling victory, but two lapses in basic skills cost us dear at the death. Our poor first-half performance left us with a lot to do as well.

Depleted Nets show fighting spirit
NEWI Nets put in an heroic performance on Saturday but still lost out at Derby Trailblazers 77-66. In front of a packed Moor-ways Centre crowd, the Wrexham visitors battled valiantly in a thrilling English Basketball League Division Two contest.
And Nets' performance was all the more impressive given they were without key players Alan Duppa, Jon Linsley and Robbie Connell.
In their absence, player-coach Matt Weedall led from the front, top scoring with 17 points, taking 11 rebounds. Weedall said: 'I am proud of the team. They put in a magnificent fighting display. Our free-throwing was up to 75%, which is very respectable, but our turnovers continue to be a problem.
In the first quarter, Derby threatened to wipe out their visitors, building a 26-13 lead. Only 11 points shared between Steve Flanagan, Maarten Wijdekop and Weedall kept them in touch. The second quarter was a closer affair as veteran Mark Ogley exerted some control from the point to keep Nets in the running. At half-time Derby led 45-29.
The away side's bench made tactical defensive changes for the third quarter - and the results were immediate as they won it 20-11, with Weedall netting 10 points, ably supported by Andy White (7) to cut the gap between the teams to seven. Derby responded by bringing on a third outside-shooter - the experienced Tim Lasielles. And it was his calming influence which ensured the hosts nicked it.

Nets finally taste defeat
NETS suffered their first home league defeat in more than a year, but weren't disgraced going down 78-71 in the English Basketball League Division Two against the unbeaten West Herts Warriors. Nets battled hard and the game only slipped away in the last five minutes. Leading 39-34 at the break the Nets were in a strong position, but saw their lead eroded to just a single point by the end of the third quarter.
Warriors were resurgent in the final quarter with their big scorers Komba and Obulaja doing the damage.
'We matched up to the Warriors in almost all respects which pleased me,' said coach Matt Weedall. 'We came closer than most teams to taking their 100% record and with more composure from the three-point line and a big reduction in our turnovers it could have been a different story. Huge thanks to our loyal band of supporters whose enthusiasm kept us going.' Leading scorers: Wijdekop 19, Flanagan 12, Weedall 10, White 9.

Northampton all-stars too strong
NEWI Nets were beaten by one of the best teams in the English Basketball League Division Two on Sunday. The 97-85 defeat at Northampton Neptunes was the Wrexham side's second in three games - but they were far from disgraced.
Nets started the brighter and deservedly took a 23-22 lead into the second session, with Alan Duppa, John Linsley and Maarten Wijdekop all in good nick. But after that, Northampton's superior shooting shone through - especially from the three-point range. Despite strong play from Linsley - Nets' best player - the hosts went into the break 42-36 to the good.
And it got no better for the away side in the third period. Their frustration culminated in player-coach Matt Weedall being fouled out towards the end of the quarter. Nets showed glimpses of a late rally in the final session, scoring 29 points, but Northampton's ability to sink three-pointers saw them home, and meant they maintained their 100% winning-record. Linsley led the scoring with 24 points, followed by Duppa (14) and Weedall (10).
Weedall said: 'We never got to grips with their zone defence and our free-throw shooting let us down. On the positive side, we were not disgraced and matched up well to a strong Northampton side in many areas. Sunday's home game with West Herts Warriors will also be tough, but we will be in there striving for a victory.'

Nets off the mark in league campaign
NETS posted their first EBL National League Division Two points of the season at Plas Coch on Sunday. Having led by 20 points at one stage, Nets were pegged back to seven with five minutes to go. A late surge featuring points from Flanagan, Duppa and Connell saw Nets to a 16-points victory.
They found Raiders a real handful in the first quarter and despite six consecutive points from Maarten Wijdekop, Raiders led 24-20 at the first break. Nets stormed back to take the second quarter 19-11 with Duppa (8pts) and Andy White (6) to the fore. With solid form from Linsley, Weedall and Roberts, this was Nets' best basketball for some time.
At half-time they led 49-35 and stretched their lead by a further four points in the third period with Duppa, Wijdekop and Weedall doing the damage. Raiders dangerman Rodgers was well shackled by John Linsley, while fringe players Ian Thomas and Shaun Jones were impressive. The fourth period saw Nets wobble a little as Plymouth clawed back to within seven points, but some steady free-throw shooting from Steve Flanagan and a three-point shot from Robbie Connell at the death saw Nets over the line.
Coach Matt Weedall was pleased with a better all-round team performance and said: 'Although we were a little patchy at times, our defensive play was high-tempo and restricted Plymouth's better players. 'It was particularly pleasing to see Ian Thomas and Shaun Jones come off the bench and give such a good account of themselves. 'Hopefully we can take added confidence on a tough trip to Northampton this week.'

NEWI Nets made a losing start to life in the English Basketball League Division Two on Saturday - but they were not helped by some questionable officiating. After being knocked out of both the National Cup and the Patron's Cup, the Wrexham team were looking to bounce back with victory in the league opener at Mansfield Express.
And had it not been for some controversial decisions, they may have done just that. The hosts were given a number of fouls in the final period, which meant they sneaked it 66-63. At the end of the first half Nets looked favourites for the win, with Steve Flanagan, Andy White, Steve Roberts and the returning John Linsley all playing well. But Mansfield - who finished second last term - reduced the deficit in the third, before levelling it at 55-55 in the last period.
From then on both teams pushed forward. But it was the home side, aided by a number of debatable calls, who edged it in the end. Flanagan and White top scored for Nets with 15 points each, while Weedall, Roberts and Linsley all shot six apiece.
Nets player-coach Matt Weedall was livid. He said: 'We deserved to win this game. We were much sharper in our passing and looked after the ball better. So in the interests of diplomacy, I will just say I was disappointed with a number of the refereeing decisions against us. And I told them so, in private, after the game. The statistics show a foul count skewed in favour of one team. This was not a dirty game.'

Most coaches will tell you making the transition to another a level is difficult task, and the two recent games versus Aston have only reinforced this. Tactically, I thought we more than matched the Aston outfit, although playing against bigger and better athletes than we have been used to, appeared to have been the stumbling block! To win games you have to dominate your own boards and we simply didnt do this for long periods of the game.
On a positive note, I was pleased with the way we came back at them late in the fourth quarter reducing the deficit to just six giving ourselves an opportunity to win the ball game. Unfortunately some unforced turnovers at a critical time in the game handed the Birmingham outfit there win.
We have now had a good look at what to expect in this league, fortunately enough this was a trophy game and I am confident we a have a formula to beat them in the all important league fixtures. |

NEWI Nets poor form continued on Saturday as they went down to Aston Athletics. It was their second defeat in the Patrons Cup and third on the run in all competitions.
They trailed their Birmingham hosts from the very beginning in which they went down 24-13. Alan Duppa and player-Coach Matt Weedall got all of the away teams points in the period.
The second quarter was more even with Steve Flanagan in good nick after a two week layoff. But Nets trailed 44-30 at the break.
Needing to win the third quarter to stand any chance Weedalls lost it 18-10 meaning that had to throw everything forward in the final period. Aston took advantage of the gaps to run out easy winners. |

Though we still had three front line players unavailable, this was no excuse. Our defensive play was slack and we turned the ball over far too many times, giving cheap points to the opposition. We have to improve substantially if we are to make any impression in the return lag next Saturday. |

NEWI Nets are intent on picking up their first win of the season on Saturday. The Wrexham side fell to their second defeat in two games on Sunday when they were knocked out of the National Cup by Coventry Crusaders at the second-round stage.
Already the underdogs for the tie as the Crusaders play in a league higher than the Nets, Matt Weedall's plans for a cup shock were hit further when four of his regulars were unavailable. And their absence proved costly as the visitors - featuring two American imports and ex-international Dip Donaldson - ran out 108-74 winners.
The first quarter saw Nets hold their own and they went into the break at just 22-20 down. Maarten Wijdekop shot well with Steve Roberts and Alan Duppa prominent. Two three-point shots from Robbie Connell also helped the cause.
The second quarter saw Crusaders step up a gear to make it 46-32 and after the break the Nets tired further.
With the game moving out of their reach, player-coach Weedall gave the youngsters a run-out - the highlight being a three-pointer from Craig Jones. Duppa top-scored on 26, Wijdekop 14 and Weedall 12. The boss, although disappointed praised his players for never giving up. |

Coventry proved to be a good Division 1 team and therefore the score reflected that. I thought we played well near the start of the game but their outside shooting made the difference. |

We played reasonably well but I was a little disappointed at losing. Playing Chester the night before may have had an effect with players being tired. The ball was turned over too much although it’s a learning curve. |

The team played well in this game and showed a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Our guards put them through a lot but playing with only one coach proved to be a little difficult. We pulled through this and shot the ball well which led to winning the game. |
